Make no mistake. The BJP win in Uttar Pradesh is a defining moment in Indian democracy.

In the past 25 years, never has a party so decisively controlled the levers of power in both Delhi and UP, home to 200 million and the heart of Indian politics. Rarely has a party been able to expand its social base, in such quick time, in such an unprecedented manner, across Hindu castes.

And not since the 1960s has a party exercised such dominance in national politics. The BJP was strong in the west, it was expanding in the east, but it did not have a state in the core heartland, from Delhi all the way to West Bengal, even though it was seen as a cow-belt party. That has now been addressed — and how.

Yogi Adityanath Reminds People Of 'Certain Responsibilities' In Gorakhpur

NEW DELHI:  At a shelter built for cows in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath sent a veiled warning to the people who sent him to Parliament for five consecutive times - that they had "certain responsibilities" and needed to progress towards development. The words were yet another emphasis on the message of "discrimination towards none and development for all" that Yogi Adityanath -- seen for years as the BJP's mascot of Hindutva -- has been sending out since he was picked for the state's top job.

"The people of Gorakhpur have elected me repeatedly. However, the people have certain responsibilities too," the Chief Minister said in what was seen as a message advising restraint to his supporters. "There will be no discrimination with anyone... society will develop along with everyone. We all will progress toward a new development together," he added.


Yesterday, on his first visit to what has been his spiritual home since his teen years, he had said, Josh mein aake hosh nahi khona chahiye" (Don't get carried away by the victory)". The priest-turned politician had pointed out that any move seen as an excess will be used by the opposition parties to scuttle Prime Minister Narendra Modi's development agenda.

"Yahan par kisi ke saath na jaati ke naam par, na mat ke naam par, na mazhab ke naam par, na ling ke naam par kisi prakar ka koi bhed bhaav nahi hoga. Vikas sabka hoga lekin tushtikaran kisi ka nahi hoga  (There will be no discrimination on grounds of caste, views, religion or gender. There will be development for all but appeasement of none," he had said.

Asaduddin Owaisi says Muslim vote-bank is a myth

HYDERABAD: Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) drew a blank in all 35 seats it contested in Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, despite Asaduddin Owaisi drawing massive crowds in his election trail.

Talking to reporters at party headquarters in Darussalam on Saturday, the MIM president said poll results proved the Muslim vote-bank is a myth and the community is no torch-bearer of halting the saffron juggernaut. He also compared the BJP to a computer, with 'development' as its user name and 'Hindutva' as password.

"I have always been stating there was never and will never be a Muslim vote-bank. It has always been the opposite," said Owaisi, who represents Hyderabad in the Lok Sabha.

While constituencies with a substantial Muslim population such as Deoband too went to BJP, Owaisi claimed he is certain most Muslims did not vote for the saffron party. "At least 80-90 per cent Muslims did not vote for them," he said, while wondering which party was communal and which was secular. BJP's 'programme' and rhetoric in Uttar Pradesh was not inclusive, he said.

In Lok Sabha, Yogi Adityanath takes a dig at Rahul-Akhilesh partnership

NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh chief minister+ Yogi Adityanath today took a dig at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav, whose alliance+ the BJP defeated+ by a handsome margin in the state assembly election.

"I'm one year younger than Rahul ji and an year older than Akhilesh ji. The fact that I could come in between their partnership may be the reason for your (SP-Congress alliance) failure," Adityanath jibed.

His teasing remark, which earned a round of laughs and sent the opposition into a tizzy, was preceded by an attack on the former Samajwadi Party government for not utilizing the funds channeled to it by the Centre.

"Over the last two and a half years, the Central government allocated 2.5 lakh crore rupees to UP. But the state government utilized only Rs 78,000 crore. This was because they did not have a proper model for the state's development," he charged.

In his final address to the Lok Sabha, the newly-coronated UP chief minister hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policy of inclusive growth for turning the country's economy around,

"In the last three years, the development schemes and programmes implemented by this government are being viewed as an ideal model in the country and the world over... PM Modi is being hailed as a global icon," Adityanath said.
Citing the rise in the country's growth rate, Adityanath also acknowledged finance minister Arun Jaitley's efforts in this regard.

"I thank the finance minister for breathing new life into our country's economy," the UP chief minister said.

The firebrand BJP leader, who is viewed by many as a Hindutva mascot, then touched upon the Prime Minister's 'Sabka saath, sabka vikas' motto to say the BJP-led NDA government had ensured growth and development for all sections of the society.

Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad hits Air India staff: Why did the crew not restrain him?

I have just seen a photograph of Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad who has just informed all and sundry that he hit an Air India steward 25 times for insulting him. Looks like a skinny little lightweight.

It seems the lofty MP was placed in economy class though he had a business class seat. An upgrade was not possible because it was an all-economy flight. So much for service to the people. When he complained about this maltreatment (come on, guys, give him a break, he is an MP, a VIP, oh mighty One) he did what comes naturally to those bestowed with greater and grander body and soul. He took off his slipper and he whacked the steward 25 times.

This is utterly acceptable behaviour for those who believe they are God’s gift to mankind and we, the people, are pretty unfair that we should even question it. Instead, we should praise him for the insult he bore. After all, it is very insulting to men of such stature to sit with the great unwashed in a cattle car and even more insulting to be abused by being told by the steward that he would report the MP to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This, of course, seeing as how the Shiv Sena is a BJP ally, not as if the MP was a Congressman. Complaining to Modi ranks there with trolls talking dirty and no wonder the lordly member of the house felt justified in slapping a slipper 25 times.

Remember that Mithun Reddy fellow in Tirupathi who did much the same to an Air India official in 2015 for not allowing him and his family to board after they arrived late.

So, while I am totally on Gaikwad’s side and feel for him in a nation where some people are naturally and deservedly more equal than others and must be treated with vats of respect I am a little bit puzzled. This wimpy little man got in 25 whacks. That must have taken over a minute at a slap every two seconds. What the heck was the Air India steward doing? What the heck was the rest of the crew doing? These cabin crew walk off full flights if they have passed their flight and duty time by one minute. Yet, they all stood there and watched while this man took to his shoe so many times.

Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad hits Air India staff: Why India needs a no-fly list

If a catalyst was needed to create a ‘No Fly’ list of unruly air passengers in India, Thursday's incident involving a VIP flyer hitting an airline staffer should provide enough impetus for it. According to a complaint filed by R Sukumar, Duty Manager of Air India, Shiv Sena MP Ravinder Gaikwad refused to get off a flight which had landed at Delhi from Pune at around 09:40 on Thursday morning. Sukumar said that when he asked the MP to disembark from the plane, since the flight had to leave for Goa and 115 passengers were waiting to get on to it, the MP became abusive. Gaikwad allegedly also had a problem with Sukumar speaking in English. Then the MP (by his own admission) started beating the Duty Manager. Sukumar has ended his complaint by stating “God save our country if this is the culture and behaviour of our MPs.”

Speaking to TV channels, Gaikwad did not once deny that he had assaulted an employee of Air India. He was also seen bragging about how he had hit the airline staffer 25 times. Gaikwad was also heard saying that he will file a complaint with the Civil Aviation Minister A Gajapathi Raju as well as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Neither Gaikwad nor Air India is a stranger to controversy involving flights and MPs. An airline veteran says there are quite a few instances of MPs delaying flights, demanding special treatment. But anyone physically assaulting an airline employee is still not a common occurrence. Perhaps Gaikwad has bitten off more than he can chew this time?
On its part, Air India first did what comes naturally to any 'sarkari' company in our country – it sought a report.

The report submitted by Deputy GM (Commercial), Harendra Singh, says that the MP demanded Air India’s CMD or another director level officer to come on board the aircraft and sort out his issue. This implies that he didn't want mere airport in-charges to address his grievances, he wanted topmost officer running Air India. Would the MP have made the same demands if he were travelling by a private airline, one wonders. But what exactly caused the MP to fly into a rage? The report by Harendra Singh says that the MP wanted to know why he was asked to fly economy class when he held a ticket for business class.

An Air India spokesperson says an FIR has been lodged in this incident, and added that Air India is “examining the creation of a no-fly list of unruly passengers.” Sources tell Firstpost that a second FIR has also been lodged by the airline, accusing the MP of delaying the flight. If a no-fly list is created after this unprecedented and boorish behaviour by an elected representative of the people, perhaps we will have to thank Gaikwad. Such a list would not only create some apprehension in the minds of people about what is and isn't acceptable behaviour in the skies, it would also arm airlines to better deal with nuisances.

Demonetisation has people's support, Opposition rattled: BJP resolution

Condemning "malicious" efforts of rival parties, the resolution alleged that they are desperate to provoke violence and chaos as they have been "rattled" by people's wide support to the decision and urged the Prime Minister to call for other effective measures to clean up the system.

They are bent upon disrupting the proceedings of Parliament on one pretext or the other, it alleged, targeting the opposition.

President, PM condole death of former Israel Prez Peres

New Delhi, Sep 28 () President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of other leaders today condoled the passing away of former Israel President Shimon Peres, saying he made courageous efforts to achieve peace for his country and the region.

In a message to Israel's President Reuven Rivlin, Mukherjee conveyed his heartfelt condolences and said he was deeply saddened to learn about the demise of Peres.

"In his passing, Israel has lost a statesman who made courageous efforts to achieve peace for his country and the region. The worldwide admiration and accolades that he received for his work - including the Noble Peace Prize, are a testimony to the values that he stood for.

"Peres was a visionary who strongly believed in the power of knowledge, innovation and technology," he said in a statement.

NEW DELHI: Taking the offensive right into the heart of Pakistan, India decided on Monday to suspend the meeting of the Indus Water Commission and explore ways to use its share of water of rivers flowing into Pakistan, besides hinting that it could revive construction of the Tulbul project in Jammu & Kashmir.

"Blood and water cannot flow simultaneously," Prime Minister Narendra Modi told a meeting where the decisions designed to make Pakistan pay for the terrorist attack on the Uri Army camp were taken, extending the retaliation against the strike beyond efforts to isolate Pakistan diplomatically+ .

In fact, sources said, India could even consider walking out of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) if Pakistan does not rein in terrorists, adding that the water-sharing pact is not sacrosanct.

Paris climate deal to be ratified on 2 October: All you need to know about India's COP21 stand

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced that India will ratify the Conference of Parties (CoP) protocol on combating climate change on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary on 2 October.

"Now the time has come to ratify the COP21 protocol. India will do it on Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October," Modi said while addressing the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) national executive meet in Kozhikode, Kerala.

In the UN climate change conference COP21 in Paris, 195 countries adopted the first universal, legally binding global climate deal. The agreement sets out a global action plan to put the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2°Celsius. The agreement is due to enter into force in 2020.

Indus Waters Treaty: Five key facts

The Modi govt is under tremendous pressure to take concrete actions against Pakistan to rein in terrorism emanating from its soil against India in the aftermath of the gruesome killing of 18 soldiers in the Uri terror attack on 18 September.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting on Monday with senior government officials to review the Indus Waters Treaty has further raised the possibility that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government may seek to alter or scrap the provisions of the 1960 treaty.

The Modi government is under tremendous public pressure to take concrete actions against Pakistan to rein in terrorism emanating from its soil against India in the aftermath of the gruesome killing of 18 soldiers in the Uri terror attack on 18 September.

But the key question is: Can India take unilateral actions altering the provisions of the treaty? There are no straightforward answers to this question between two hostile nuclear powers.

To put it in perspective, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah wrote in his Tweet last Friday that the 1960 World Bank-mediated Indus Waters Treaty between India and Pakistan has survived three wars and numerous lows in India-Pakistan relations.

No More Peace Talks, Majority Of Indians Want To Use Military To Fight Terror

Bruce Stokes, director global economic attitudes at Pew told TOI, "These figures are striking. Modi is doing better than Obama in the US or Angela Merkel in Germany."

Afghan president Ashraf Ghani to meet PM Narendra Modi tomorrow

New Delhi: Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani will visit India on Wednesday against the backdrop of rising violence by rebel Taliban militants, tension within the National Unity Government in his country and China building a new rail link from its east coast to Afghanistan.

Ghani will be arriving in India on Wednesday to hold “close consultations” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during which the Afghan president could ask for increased military assistance from New Delhi.

The Afghan president’s programme in New Delhi includes a lunch by Modi, an address to Indian businessmen and a speech to the government-run New Delhi-based think tank, the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses.

India has always considered Afghanistan as part of its extended neighbourhood and has sought friendly ties with Kabul, much to the discomfort of regional rival Pakistan. New Delhi has been one of the biggest donors to Afghanistan, pledging $2 billion in support for reconstruction programmes in the war-torn country.

Announcing Ghani’s visit, the Indian foreign ministry in a statement over the weekend said the discussions between Ghani and Modi will “provide an opportunity to continue the close and frequent consultations between the two friendly neighbours, including at the highest level.”
