Assembly Elections 2017: How Narendra Modi won Uttar Pradesh

Make no mistake. The BJP win in Uttar Pradesh is a defining moment in Indian democracy.

In the past 25 years, never has a party so decisively controlled the levers of power in both Delhi and UP, home to 200 million and the heart of Indian politics. Rarely has a party been able to expand its social base, in such quick time, in such an unprecedented manner, across Hindu castes.

And not since the 1960s has a party exercised such dominance in national politics. The BJP was strong in the west, it was expanding in the east, but it did not have a state in the core heartland, from Delhi all the way to West Bengal, even though it was seen as a cow-belt party. That has now been addressed — and how.

Modi ki sarkar

Travelling on the ground, it is astonishing to see the admiration Narendra Modi evokes. We travelled in the aftermath of the decision on demonetisation, expecting to find anger, but saw people — in some of the poorest districts of UP — hailing him. Voters said he had delivered on what he promised, that he had taken on the rich and corrupt, that the gains accrued from the exercise would be eventually transferred to the poor.View more:-Bulk Sms Service provider

Asaduddin Owaisi says Muslim vote-bank is a myth

HYDERABAD: Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) drew a blank in all 35 seats it contested in Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, despite Asaduddin Owaisi drawing massive crowds in his election trail.

Talking to reporters at party headquarters in Darussalam on Saturday, the MIM president said poll results proved the Muslim vote-bank is a myth and the community is no torch-bearer of halting the saffron juggernaut. He also compared the BJP to a computer, with 'development' as its user name and 'Hindutva' as password.

"I have always been stating there was never and will never be a Muslim vote-bank. It has always been the opposite," said Owaisi, who represents Hyderabad in the Lok Sabha.

While constituencies with a substantial Muslim population such as Deoband too went to BJP, Owaisi claimed he is certain most Muslims did not vote for the saffron party. "At least 80-90 per cent Muslims did not vote for them," he said, while wondering which party was communal and which was secular. BJP's 'programme' and rhetoric in Uttar Pradesh was not inclusive, he said.

In Lok Sabha, Yogi Adityanath takes a dig at Rahul-Akhilesh partnership

NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh chief minister+ Yogi Adityanath today took a dig at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav, whose alliance+ the BJP defeated+ by a handsome margin in the state assembly election.

"I'm one year younger than Rahul ji and an year older than Akhilesh ji. The fact that I could come in between their partnership may be the reason for your (SP-Congress alliance) failure," Adityanath jibed.

His teasing remark, which earned a round of laughs and sent the opposition into a tizzy, was preceded by an attack on the former Samajwadi Party government for not utilizing the funds channeled to it by the Centre.

"Over the last two and a half years, the Central government allocated 2.5 lakh crore rupees to UP. But the state government utilized only Rs 78,000 crore. This was because they did not have a proper model for the state's development," he charged.

In his final address to the Lok Sabha, the newly-coronated UP chief minister hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policy of inclusive growth for turning the country's economy around,

"In the last three years, the development schemes and programmes implemented by this government are being viewed as an ideal model in the country and the world over... PM Modi is being hailed as a global icon," Adityanath said.
Citing the rise in the country's growth rate, Adityanath also acknowledged finance minister Arun Jaitley's efforts in this regard.

"I thank the finance minister for breathing new life into our country's economy," the UP chief minister said.

The firebrand BJP leader, who is viewed by many as a Hindutva mascot, then touched upon the Prime Minister's 'Sabka saath, sabka vikas' motto to say the BJP-led NDA government had ensured growth and development for all sections of the society.

Samajwadi Party feud: Akhilesh backs youth leaders expelled by Shivpal Yadav

LUCKNOW: Dissension in the Yadav clan again came to the fore on Tuesday as Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav openly supported the Samajwadi Party's youth leaders expelled by state president Shivpal Yadav and called on "experienced leaders" to reconsider the decision.

Shivpal had expelled seven party functionaries, including three MLCs, all considered close to Akhilesh, after assuming charge as state party chief on September 19.

"I will ask experienced leaders of my party to reconsider their decision and take back youths, who were with us from the days of struggle," Akhilesh told reporters here.

SP drama: Akhilesh Yadav's assertion brings no fruit as Mulayam stands by Shivpal

This was a rare occasion when the politician son did not retreat in the face of bullying from his domineering father, the patriarch of the Samajwadi Party. Quite naturally, the rarity of the occasion turned the row between uncle Shivpal Yadav and nephew Akhilesh Yadav into a high talking point in political circles.

Unfortunately, however, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s show of assertion proved to be nothing more than a blip of a disruption in the enduring political equilibrium forged by his father Mulayam Singh Yadav. Things are now back to where they began two days ago.

Yadav clan drama: Akhilesh-Shivpal stand-off is over privileges, not principles

The reason for the ongoing feud in the ruling family in Uttar Pradesh could, after all, be the authority to select party candidates for the 2017 Assembly election. This seemingly innocuous power is actually so strong that Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is prepared to reinstate the two ministers dismissed a few days ago, restore departments to uncle and senior minister Shivpal Yadav and, if it comes to the crunch, even quit from the chief ministerial post.

Akhilesh Yadav admitted all this rather candidly while participating in a television programme in Lucknow on Friday – the fifth day of the stand-off between him and his uncle Shivpal Yadav. In response to a question whether Shivpal could be given back the departments taken away from him, Akhilesh replied that in this case he, too, would like to get back what he had lost. And he went on to add that he would like to retain the authority to give party tickets for the forthcoming election and was even ready to lay down his office to get this authority.

SP drama: Akhilesh Yadav is a man of his own, daddy Mulayam should stop hand-holding

Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav is no Dhritarashtra. The latest turn of events in Uttar Pradesh suggest that he appears to be more beholden to his brother and interests of some others in the family than blind in affection for his son, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
By doing so, the erstwhile pehalwan wants the world and his son to know that he is the ultimate 'Bahubali' of UP politics. No one defies him, not even his otherwise beloved son.
But then Akhilesh too is no Duryodhana. He is no Yudhishtir either. He is a pragmatic young politician, entrusted with the task of ruling the Hindu heartland of UP and is the one who is reading the popular mood right – that you cannot be a winner in your own right if you don't choose the development path, look sincere in providing a government that cares for delivery of popular goods and also at times be ruthless in action, not in public demeanour, but when it looks like his authority is being challenged by a coterie of corrupt status quoists.
