Indian wealth falls 0.8% to $3 trillion in 2016: Credit Suisse

Mumbai: Hit by adverse currency movements, India's household wealth has fallen by USD 26 billion to USD 3 trillion in the current year, shows the latest report by global financial services major Credit Suisse.

According to the 'Global Wealth Report' compiled by Credit Suisse Research Institute, wealth in the country in dollar terms went down by 0.8 percent (USD 26 billion) to USD 3.099 trillion in 2016 compared to last year. The report noted that while wealth has been rising in India, not everyone has shared in this growth.

"There is still considerable wealth poverty, reflected in the fact that 96 percent of the adult population has wealth below USD 10,000," the report said.

"At the other extreme, a small fraction of the population (0.3 percent of adults) has a net worth over USD 1,00,000," it added, noting that due to India's large population, this translates into 2.4 million people.

As per the report, the country has 2,48,000 adults in the top 1 percent of global wealth holders, a 0.5 percent share.
"By our estimates, 2,260 adults have wealth over USD 50 million, and 1,040 have more than USD 100 million," it added.

Demonetisation has people's support, Opposition rattled: BJP resolution

New Delhi: People are queuing outside banks and ATMs for a better India, BJP said on Tuesday, terming it as the "most profound statement" to have ever come from them, and decried alleged "malicious" attempts by those opposing demonetisation to provoke violence and chaos.

Hailing demonetisation as a national project of cleansing the system that will usher in behavioural and attitudinal changes encouraging honesty, particularly in political life, BJP Parliamentary Party passed a resolution commending Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his "historic, revolutionary, daring and pro-poor" decision in national interest.

Amid increasing efforts by a united opposition to corner the government, the saffron party members in Parliament
rallied around Modi who asserted that this was only the beginning of his battle against corruption and black money.

Condemning "malicious" efforts of rival parties, the resolution alleged that they are desperate to provoke violence and chaos as they have been "rattled" by people's wide support to the decision and urged the Prime Minister to call for other effective measures to clean up the system.

They are bent upon disrupting the proceedings of Parliament on one pretext or the other, it alleged, targeting the opposition.

At UN General Assembly, Sushma Swaraj likely to follow Narendra Modi's stance on Pakistan

New York: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will address the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Monday, where she is expected to lead India's attack on Pakistan and seek global support to dub it a "terror state", following the Uri terror attack that killed 18 soldiers.

Taking a cue from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first public speech, post the 18 September Uri attack, on Saturday where he openly warned Pakistan of isolating it internationally, the External Affairs Minister is likely to take a tough stance, and is likely to be blunt, vis-a-vis the western neighbour.

Yadav clan drama: Akhilesh-Shivpal stand-off is over privileges, not principles

The reason for the ongoing feud in the ruling family in Uttar Pradesh could, after all, be the authority to select party candidates for the 2017 Assembly election. This seemingly innocuous power is actually so strong that Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is prepared to reinstate the two ministers dismissed a few days ago, restore departments to uncle and senior minister Shivpal Yadav and, if it comes to the crunch, even quit from the chief ministerial post.

Akhilesh Yadav admitted all this rather candidly while participating in a television programme in Lucknow on Friday – the fifth day of the stand-off between him and his uncle Shivpal Yadav. In response to a question whether Shivpal could be given back the departments taken away from him, Akhilesh replied that in this case he, too, would like to get back what he had lost. And he went on to add that he would like to retain the authority to give party tickets for the forthcoming election and was even ready to lay down his office to get this authority.

No special status for Andhra Pradesh, Centre promises monetary compensation

New Delhi/Vijayawada: Making it clear that Andhra Pradesh will not be accorded special category status, the Centre on Wednesday said the state will be provided monetary compensation through externally aided projects.

After day-long suspense and hectic consultation in the national capital, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced on Wednesday night that the state will get monetary advantage equivalent to what it would have got if it was accorded the special category status.

Jaitley made it clear that then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement made in Rajya Sabha on 20 February, 2014 for according special status to Andhra Pradesh can't be implemented as the 14th Finance Commission has recommended that the special category status can be given to only hill states and North-Eastern states.

"We have decided to give a special assistance measure for the state of Andhra Pradesh wherein an amount equivalent to what they would have got if that statement could have been implemented, will be compensated to the state by virtue of externally aided projects," he said without giving any figure.

Kashmir unrest: Miffed Centre to toughen stand against separatists, cut funds and security

While the Centre has decided to scale down the security presence in Jammu and Kashmir after Home Minister Rajnath Singh-led all-party delegation's visit to the state, the separatists leaders' refusal to hold talks has not gone down well with the government. After Singh's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, the Central government indicated that it will toughen its stand against the separatist leaders.

Reports suggested that the Centre will not only scrutinise the bank accounts of the separatists, but also speed up pending investigations in cases against them. These leaders are also likely to be banned from making foreign trips and Z-scale security provided to them will be scaled down.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs of India Kiren Rijiju said that the government will take action keeping national interest in mind.

Behaviour of separatists was not 'Kashmiriyat, insaniyat or jamhooriyat': Rajnath Singh

Srinagar: A day after Hurriyat leaders snubbed members of the all-party delegation who reached out to them, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday that the behaviour of the separatists shows they do not believe in 'Kashmiriyat', 'Insaniyat' and 'Jamhooriyat'.

Addressing a press conference on the second day of the delegation's visit, Singh said he was confident that peace will be restored in the state and the members had interacted with 30 delegations representing various sections of the society.

"As far as talks are concerned, our doors to everyone who wants peace and normalcy. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also wrote letters.

"I want to clarify that some members of the delegation had gone to meet Hurriyat leaders yesterday. Neither had we said yes nor no. Whatever happened you know about it. I do not wish to go into the details.

"But whatever information those friends gave us upon their return, it can be said it was not 'Kashmiriyat'. It cannot be called as Insaniyat (humanity). When someone goes for talks and they reject it, it is not jamhooriyat (democracy) as well. We are ready to talk to everyone who wants peace and normalcy," he said.

Singh said Jammu and Kashmir "was, is and will always be integral part of India".

The Minister said during his last visit concerns were raised about the use of pellet guns for which non-lethal replacement shells PAVA have been recommended.

"The shells will not take lives. About 1000 shells have arrived here," he said.

The Minister, who is leading an all-party delegation on a two-day visit to assuage the volatile situation in the Valley, said the entire country and Parliament are pained by the situation in Kashmir.

On a question whether India plans to talk to Pakistan on Kashmir, Singh said, "First let us talk to Indians."

When asked whether the Centre is willing to go the extra mile on the demands of autonomy raised by PDP and National Conference from time to time, he said, "We are not concerned with whatever one had said in the past. We have taken everyone's view and cooperation to improve the situation in Kashmir in the delegation-level talks."

To a query on track-2 channel talks, Singh said he did not wish to enter the debate of "track one, track-two or track-three."

The Minister said to address concerns of Kashmiri youths living in different parts of the country the Ministry has appointed Dr Sanjay Rai as nodal officer who can be approached on phone number 011-23092923, 23092885.

Singh said Parliament, which is supreme "panchayat" of the country, is very serious about the situation in Kashmir and hence decided to send a delegation of its members for talks.

He said 26 Members of Parliament belonging to 20 parties have come here for talks as part of the delegation.

More than 30 delegations comprising 300 members from political parties, civil society, University teachers, fruit growers, students and intellectuals have presented their view before the delegation, he said.

"Everyone wants that the situation must improve. The delegation spoke to these people, the Governor and the Chief Minister of State and also officials of the state government. I am fully confident that the situation will improve which people also want," he said.

He said the Centre is giving full support to the state government which is also trying to bring improvement in the situation.

In a horrifying incident, a 12-year-old girl was reportedly gangraped and strangled by two men in an Ola cab in Kolkata on Wednesday. According to reports, the body was found near a canal.

The accused have been arrested and according to police sources, the drivers confessed to picking up the girl from a footpath when they were drunk, CNN-News18 reported.

This is not a solitary incident which brings into question the safety and security of taxis run by cab aggregators like Ola and Uber but this is the first time that such a heinous crime has been reported in Kolkata.

According to Hindustan Times, Shankar Shaw and Guddu Singh told the police that they picked up the minor after they were drunk and were looking for some "merriment."

After killing her, Shaw and Singh threw her body into a canal below the Park Circus flyover. “Around 5 AM we received information that a girl was picked up in a car. From traffic control room the number of the car was established,” Hindustan Times quoted a Kolkata Police officer as saying.

In December 2015, an Ola driver had raped a woman passenger in Delhi, according to this Firstpost article. The driver stopped the vehicle at a deserted location and raped the woman in the car, threatening to kill her if she told anyone.

In May, 2016 a Belgian national was allegedly molested by an Ola cab driver in Delhi.

Uber has been under the scanner since can driver Shiv Kumar Yadav raped a woman executive in Delhi on 5 December. According to the police, the woman had dozed off on the back seat of the car, and she later woke up to find that the car had stopped at a secluded spot. When she tried to raise an alarm, the driver is said to have assaulted and raped her.

PM Modi saves Doordarshan lensmen from big mishap at inauguration of SAUNI project

The alertness of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the inauguration Saurashtra Narmada Avataran Irrigation (SAUNI) project near Jamnagar on Tuesday saved the lives of several cameramen and photographers, Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat Nitin Patel informed.

According to reports the Modi saw the Doordarshan cameraman standing in harm's way and alerted him to the danger as the water from Aji dam was being released.

Speaking at a function in Jamnagar after Modi inaugurated the ambitious SAUNI project, Patel said that the Prime Minister was just looking at the flow of the water at the Aji-3 dam site after pushing a button to start the release from the dam.

"He suddenly noticed that several cameramen and photographers were standing on the downstream side. The strong flow of water released a little while ago was racing towards them and could have washed them away," Patel said.

Busy taking photographs of the event, the cameramen and photographers were seemingly unaware of it. But by clapping his hands and with other gestures the Prime Minister alerted them and they escaped in time.

"If the PM had not alerted them, a big mishap could have happened," Patel said.

In the visuals from the incident, PM Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani can be seen pointing at something off the frame.

SAUNI Scheme is an ambitious scheme of the Gujarat government to fill up 115 dams of parched Saurashtra region with excess flood water of Sardar Sarovar dam across the Narmada river through a network of canal and pipelines.

PM Modi breaks silence on Kashmir, says sad to see youngsters carrying stones instead of laptops

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday finally broke his silence over the Kashmir issue. Evoking the Vajpayee model of 'insaniyat', the prime minister appealed for peace in Jammu and Kashmir, at a rally in Madhya Pradesh's Alirajpur district, reported NDTV.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, earlier on Tuesday, also visited Chandrashekhar Azad's birthplace in the tribal-dominated Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh and paid rich tributes to the revolutionary leader.

"Be it the Jammu and Kashmir government under Mehboobaji or the central government, we are finding solution to all problems through development," Modi said at the rally.

He said only a "handful of people who have been misled" were causing trouble in the Kashmir Valley, where protests, since the killing of rebel commander Burhan Wani on 8 July, left over 55 people dead and thousands injured.

"Some people are causing Kashmir a lot of harm," the prime minister said. "Kashmir wants peace. Whatever Kashmiris want for betterment of their livelihood, the Centre will provide."

In his speech, Modi made a direct appeal to the youngsters of Kashmir, saying that those who should be holding laptops, bats, balls in their hands & dreams in their hearts are the ones carrying stones.

Attack me if you want, not my Dalit brothers: PM Narendra Modi slams 'fake' gau rakshaks again

Hyderabad/Gajwel(Telangana): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday came down heavily on the perpetrators of violence on Dalits, telling them, "if you have to attack, attack me" but stop attacking "my Dalit bretheren".

Facing increasingly bruising opposition assault on him and BJP over attacks on Dalits and on the issue of cow vigilantes, Modi also lashed out at "fake cow protectors", denouncing them for the second day running for trying to create "tension and conflict" in the society and asking the states to take stringent action against them.

Making an emotional appeal at a meeting of BJP workers in Hyderabad, Modi asked people to protect and respect Dalits who have for long been neglected by the society.

Questioned repeatedly over his 'silence' on the sensitive issue of attacks on Dalits by alleged Hindu right-wingers, Modi said, "I would like to tell these people that if you have any problem, if you have attack, attack me. Stop attacking my Dalit brethren. If you have to shoot, shoot me, but not my Dalit brothers. This game should stop."

Modi's choice of Hyderabad to denounce the attacks on Dalits was significant as his government had come under opposition fire following the suicide by a Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula in the city which had triggered campus unrest in several parts of the country.

Modi said at times some incidents come to notice which give us "unbearable pain". "It should be our responsibility to save and respect them (Dalits)," he said without referring to any particular incident.

Modi asked what right the perpetrators had to exploit Dalits and said the unity in society should be our priority. "I know this problem is social. It is a result of sins which have crept into the society... But we need to take extra care and save society from such danger (of social strife)," he said. Modi said the society should not be allowed to be divided on the basis of caste, religion and social status.

Deprecating those who try to make political currency out of such issues, the Prime Minister said attempts to politicize those would only aggravate the problem. "Those who want to solve this social problem, I request them to leave politics that divides the society. Divisive politics will not do any good to the country," he said.

Earlier on Sunday, the prime minister took on cow vigilantes at a public meeting in Gajwel in Telangana after laying the foundation stones for a raft of development projects. "I want to tell everybody beware of these fake cow protectors. These handful of vigilantes have nothing to do with cow protection, but want to create 'tanaav' (tension) and 'takrav' (conflict) in the society," Modi said.

"In the name of cow protection, these fake cow protectors are trying to disturb the peace and harmony of the nation. I want the real cow protectors to expose them (fake ones) and the state governments should take stringent action against them," he added.

In his first public denouncement of cow vigilantes, some of whom flogged dalits in Gujarat for skinning a dead cow, Modi on Saturday said in Delhi he felt enraged at such "anti-social elements" who indulged in crimes by the night and masqueraded as cow protectors by the day.

As he denounced cow vigilantism, Modi also pitched for protection of the animal, held holy by Hindus. "Cow will never become a burden. Cow urine and dung are used in agriculture," he said, adding that cow should be linked to the country's economic development.

India is a land of diversity, he said, adding "protecting our country's unity and integrity is our primary responsibility. To fulfil it all countrymen should protect and serve cows (gau raksha and gau seva karein). Such service enhances national wealth.... it does not create problem for the nation".

"But fake (cow protectors) destroy society and country. We need to beware of these people. There is a need to punish these people. Then alone can we take the nation to great heights," the Prime Minister said.

Notwithstanding Modi's criticism of the vigilantes, the opposition termed it as "absolutely humbug", alleging that his ideological co-travellers were perpetrating "terror" in the name of cow protection.

Congress leader Manish Tewari questioned Modi's "silence" on the Dadri lynching incident last year and alleged that the PM was selective in his outreach.

"..why does he not prevail upon RSS to disband the VHP, why does he not take action against the office bearers of Bajrang Dal?

'Beware of nakli gau rakshak': PM Modi denounces 'cow vigilantes' for the second time
Opposition terms PM Modi's remarks against cow vigilantes as 'absolutely humbug'

"Therefore it is his ideological co-travellers who have been perpetrating this spectre of uncertainty and terror in the name of cow lumpenism across the country, thereby whatever the Prime Minister says today is absolutely humbug and completely sanctimonious," Tewari said.

Echoing similar sentiments, JD(U) leader Pavan Verma said had the PM given a stern message earlier, the "menace" of gau rakshaks could have been prevented.

"If the Prime Minister had given the same message earlier, we would not have seen this menace of gau rakshaks spreading pan India. But he choose to keep silent although he tweets on any other subject under the sun. Breaking the silence is welcome, the only question is why so late," he said.

CPI leader D Raja also crticised the ruling dispensation stating there were issues on which people expect the PM to speak, including, increasing atrocities on dalits.

"Why has the PM not uttered a single word against the atrocities committed in his own state Gujarat?" he asked.

BJP, however, defended Modi's statement and said the opposition attack was a "classic book example of political bankruptcy".

"There cannot be more direct censure by the Prime Minister in expressing his displeasure to what anti-social elements are doing in the name of 'Gau Raksha'," BJP National Secretary Sidharth Nath Singh said.

Hafiz Saeed wants nationwide protest in Pakistan if Rajnath Singh is allowed to visit

Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed has asked the Pakistani government not to allow Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh to visit Pakistan and has warned of a nationwide protest if Singh does visit the country.

According to India Today, Saeed said that if Rajnath Singh's visit to Pakistan should only be considered if India allows the Pakistani government to send people to Jammu and Kashmir to help the Kashmiris there.

He also said that Pakistan should stop the export of onions and potatoes to India and should instead send relief materials to Kashmir.

Accusing Rajnath Singh of being "responsible for the killings of innocent Kashmiris", Saeed has warned of a countrywide protest in Pakistan by his outfit if the home minister arrives in Islamabad to attend the Saarc ministerial conference.

"I want to ask the Pakistani government: Will it add insult to injury to the wounds of Kashmiris by welcoming Rajnath who is responsible for the killings of innocent Kashmiris?" he asked in a statement in Lahore.

"It will be ironic as on the one hand, the whole Pakistani nation is protesting against the Indian atrocities in Kashmir and on the other hand, the Pakistani rulers will be garlanding Singh," said the statement issued on Monday.

The mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attack said "if Singh comes to Islamabad on August 3, the JuD would hold countrywide protest to tell the world that the Pakistani rulers might have compulsions to receive Kashmiris' killers but the people of Pakistan are siding with oppressed Kashmiris."

He added that protest demonstrations will be held and rallies taken out in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Faisalabad, Muzaffarabad and other cities of the country on 3 August.

Saeed, who is carrying a $10 million US bounty on his head, warned the government that Singh's presence in Islamabad may create "unrest" among Kashmiris as well as Pakistanis in the face of scores of killings of Kashmiris "at the hands of Indian forces".

The people of Kashmir had refused to meet Singh during his Srinagar visit, he said adding the PML-N government "must also refuse to receive the BJP leader on the excuse that it may hurt and incite feelings of Kashmiris and Pakistanis."

The 40-year-old Indian woman, who was abducted in Afghanistan on 9 June, has reportedly been rescued. External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj announced the happy news on her Twitter account early on Saturday morning. She is expected to come home on Saturday night.

"I am happy to inform you that Judith D'Souza has been rescued. Judith was abducted in Kabul on 9th June 2016," she tweeted.

Swaraj also thanked Afghanistan for their help and support in rescuing Judith. She applauded India's ambassador to Afghan Manpreet Vohra for doing an "outstanding job".

Vohra in turn said "everyone concerned worked long and hard" to secure the release.

Judith's brother Jerome D'Souza too took to Twitter to thank the Indian government and the people for their wishes. He also announced that she will return home on Saturday evening.

Thank you, my dear community. For your love and support at a most difficult time. Very grateful. Judith comes home tonite.

The motive of her abduction was deduced to be ransom and the Taliban had no hand in her kidnapping, as was suspected by many. She was reportedly kept in the Shomali plains, close to the house of the two men in custody.

The Hindu quoted Judith's brother Jerome as saying, "I am grateful to the Government of India and particularly to the tireless efforts of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

The Indian authorities were constantly in touch with the Afghan government to secure Judith's release. The authorities were also in touch with her family.

Judith was working as a senior technical advisor for an NGO Aga Khan Development Network in Kabul. After she went "missing" on 9 June, Judith's father received a call from the Indian Embassy in Kabul informing him that his daughter has “in all probability been abducted," Firstpost had reported.

He was informed that three persons – Judith, a security guard and the driver of the vehicle, were abducted. However, The Hindu reported that the two men were let off because they were Afghan and Judith was asked if she was a "foreigner". However, her abduction made the police suspicious and the two men, who were released were taken into custody. Interrogating the men revealed significant details about the abduction and Judith's whereabouts.

Judith's family and well wishers had launched a campaign on Twitter to bring her back. #rescuejudith was trending and people were doing their best to support the family and help with the rescue operation.

Since her abduction, Judith's family has written and appealed a number of times to the Indian government. They have always received a positive response from the government. They were always hopeful of her return.

Search for missing Indian Air Force aircraft AN-32 continues; no debris found in Bay of Bengal

Chennai: The search for the AN-32 aircraft with 29 people on board that went missing on Friday morning, continued on Saturday with no sightings of any debris in the Bay of Bengal, said an official of Indian Air Force (IAF).

"The search is going on. If there is any substantial development it will be made known," Wing Commander Anupam Banerjee, Public Relations Officer for IAF told IANS over phone from New Delhi on Saturday.

A Coast Guard official told IANS that there was sightings of any aircraft debris in the Bay of Bengal by the search team.

Only a catastrophic accident in a "no talk/radio zone" or "dead zone" could destroy an aircraft suddenly, an experienced pilot with the Indian defence forces told IANS late Friday.

Those on board comprised six crew members, 15 personnel from the IAF, army, navy and Coast Guard, and eight civilians who were family members of the personnel.

The aircraft, an upgraded AN-32 belonging to 33 Squadron, took off from Tambaram Air Force Station in Chennai at 8.30 am, and was expected to land at Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 11.30 am, officials said, describing it as a "routine sortie".

According to a report submitted to Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar by Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha and the recorded transcript of Chennai air traffic radar, last pickup was 151 nautical miles east of Chennai when the aircraft was observed to have carried out a left turn with rapid loss of height from 23,000 feet.

A massive search and rescue operation involving aircraft, helicopters, ships and a submarine was launched immediately to find the plane that went missing around 300 kilometres off Chennai, and will continue through the night.

The last contact with the aircraft was established roughly around 15-20 minutes after the take-off, sources said.

According to IAF, the AN-32 is a twin engine turboprop, medium tactical transport aircraft of Russian origin. It can carry a maximum load of around 6.7 tonne or a 39 paratroopers.

The aircraft's maximum cruise speed is 530 kmph.

"Planes are designed to fly even during an emergency. There will be reaction time to the pilots facing an emergency to send out messages for help or turn towards safety," an Indian defence forces pilot told IANS.

According to the pilot, an AN-32 aircraft will not drop down like a stone or vanish into thin air in the case of normal emergency, as there will be reaction time.

"But in the case of a catastrophic threat, the pilots will not have the necessary reaction time," he said.

An aircraft will not always be on the radar, he noted.

"If the distance to be travelled is around 1,500 km for instance and travel path involves flying over sea then there are chances that the aircraft could not be in the radar from the city of departure after say around 300 kilometers. And it would come into the radar on the other side only when it is around 300 kilometers from its destination," he said.

"So effectively sometimes there will be a dead zone of 700 kilometers. In smaller aircraft, the pilots switch on to the high frequency for being in touch," the pilot added.

Coming to the probable cause of its vanishing suddenly, he said: "The possibilities of different catastrophic events happening in the sky cannot be ruled out."

"For example if an aircraft is caught in a strong thunderstorm, then a plane is as good as a paper caught in the storm.

"The storm will throw the plane like a stone," he said.

According to him, there have been instances when an airplane that was flying at around 35,000 feet altitude dropped down to 5,000 feet but regained control after that.

The other catastrophic events that can happen to a plane were sudden failure of all the engines, devastasting fire, fuel leakage, jamming of flight controls, loss of flight controls due to fire, power and electrical failure and others.

He said in the best case scenario if the AN-32 had come down gradually then it would have been picked up by some radar or the pilots would have the time to react.

Normally a plane is fuelled taking into account the emergency deviations that may arise - the need to go back to the airport from where it took off or to some other nearby airport in case of an emergency, he added.

The incident comes a year after a Coast Guard Dornier aircraft with three crew members on board for a routine surveillance flight went missing.

The search team found its black box nearly a month later. The skeletal remains and personal belongings of the crew members were recovered from the sea bed off the Tamil Nadu coast.
