US Urges India And Pakistan To Resolve Differences Through Diplomacy

WASHINGTON:  The United States has urged India and Pakistan to resolve their differences through diplomacy.

"We have continued to encourage India and Pakistan to find ways to resolve their differences, not through violence, but through diplomacy," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters at his daily news conference.

Speaking about Pakistan, Mr Earnest said, "We have condemned violence, particularly terrorist attacks."

He was responding to a question on India's decision not to attend the SAARC Summit in Islamabad in November citing continuous cross border terrorism by Pakistan against India.

The State Department too refrained to make any comment on India's decision in this regard and said it is for New Delhi to decide.

"I would refer you to the Government of India to comment on their decision not to attend this meeting," State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner said.

Obama on Friday vetoed the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, which would allow courts to waive claims to foreign sovereign immunity in cases involving terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, arguing it would set a dangerous precedent.

Known as JASTA, the legislation passed the Senate and House in reaction to long-running suspicions — denied by Saudi Arabia — that hijackers of the four U.S. jetliners that attacked the United States in 2001 were backed by the Saudi government.

Paris climate deal to be ratified on 2 October: All you need to know about India's COP21 stand

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced that India will ratify the Conference of Parties (CoP) protocol on combating climate change on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary on 2 October.

"Now the time has come to ratify the COP21 protocol. India will do it on Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October," Modi said while addressing the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) national executive meet in Kozhikode, Kerala.

In the UN climate change conference COP21 in Paris, 195 countries adopted the first universal, legally binding global climate deal. The agreement sets out a global action plan to put the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2°Celsius. The agreement is due to enter into force in 2020.

Emergency declared in US city of Charlotte after deadly police shooting

CHARLOTTE: Violence flared Wednesday in the southern US city of Charlotte, North Carolina, in a second night of unrest ignited by the fatal police shooting of a black man.

Several hundred people taunted riot police in front of a hotel in the city center, during which a man fell to the ground. Witnesses said police brought him into the hotel after he fell, leaving blood on the sidewalk.

Some protesters banged on glass windows, others threw objects at police and stood on cars as police appeared to fire tear gas, prompting demonstrators to run.

"We are calling for peace, we are calling for calm, we are calling for dialogue," Mayor Jennifer Roberts said earlier in the day. "We all see this as a tragedy."

A summit hosted by U.S. President Barack Obama garnered pledges from dozens of countries to resettle or allow the lawful admission of some 360,000 refugees, doubling the number of slots that were available last year, the US envoy to the United Nations said. But Ambassador Samantha Power said that was “still only a fraction” of what was needed because the U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR, has assessed that some 1.2 million refugees need to be resettled. Countries could only attend Obama’s summit at the annual U.N. gathering of world leaders if they made a pledge.

US-Saudi Alliance: Barack Obama will veto bill that allows 9/11 victims to sue Saudi, says White House

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama will veto the bill passed by the Republican-majority House of Representatives that, if passed, would allow victims of the 9/11 attacks and their relatives to sue foreign governments suspected of backing terrorism against America, the White House has said.

The Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act was approved unanimously in the House last week, four months after Senate cleared it.

"The President does intend to veto this legislation," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said.

The legislation is strongly opposed by Saudi Arabia which is home to 15 of the 19 hijackers in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks

India ride-hailing firm Ola sideswiped as Uber, Didi team up in China

Didi Chuxing's acquisition of Uber's China business last week reshapes the landscape in Asia's growing ride-hailing sector, and leaves India's Ola more vulnerable to attack by Uber in its $12 billion home market.
Four months ago, Ola executives met with Didi hoping the Chinese firm would invest fresh capital to help it fight Uber Technologies Inc which, with its deeper pockets, has made rapid inroads into India.
They were told Didi wanted first to sort out its own challenges in China, said a person with direct knowledge of Ola's plans. Didi and Uber have raised and spent billions of dollars in a discount slugfest to win drivers, passengers and market share in China.
Didi, now worth around $35 billion, last year invested about $30 million in Ola, which is also backed by Japan's SoftBank Group (9984 T), and the two are allies in an anti-Uber group that also includes U.S.-based Lyft and Southeast Asia-focused Grab.
"This (Didi/Uber China) deal changes the dynamics of how they (Didi) will invest in India," said the person, who didn't want to be named because the discussions were private. If Didi invests more in Ola, it's effectively betting against Uber, its new partner in China, the person said.
It's not clear whether Didi would provide equity or debt to Ola, which has raised around $1.3 billion in funding and is valued at over $5 billion. SoftBank Capital, Ola's key investor, faces its own financial issues and is selling assets to raise cash and reduce debt, which may pose another fundraising challenge for Ola, which was aiming to raise another $1 billion this year.
Ola did not respond to an email request for comment. Didi said in an email that it will focus in the coming months on "ensuring smooth integration internally." It did not comment on its meeting with Ola. Didi has no immediate overseas investment plans, said a person with direct knowledge of the matter.
The stakes are high in India, already one of the world's fastest growing taxi markets. Ola and Uber have burnt through investors' money and clashed in legal battles over alleged dirty-tricks tactics and pricing.
After the Didi deal, Uber is even more focussed on India, which it has previously called its No. 2 priority overseas market, doubling down on resources, staffing and technology deployed there, said two people familiar with Uber's plans, one of whom is based in the United States.

Ola, founded by two graduates from India's premier technology institute, commands half of the country's taxi market as of end-June in terms of the number of cars registered on its platform, according to Counterpoint Research, with Uber on around 30 percent market share, and catching fast.
Uber has previously launched a bike taxi and autos service in India - a sign that it wants to localize transport options and a lesson from China where it focussed on privately-owned cars in big cities, where car ownership has historically been low.

Baton Rouge shooter was ex-Marine who denied ties to any group

The gunman who killed three police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Sunday was a former US Marine sergeant who served in Iraq and made the dean's list in college, government officials with knowledge of the case said.
The suspect, Gavin Eugene Long, 29, who also wounded three other officers, was from Kansas City, Missouri, a source familiar with the investigation told Reuters. He was divorced and living in a working-class neighbourhood, and Missouri records show he had no criminal history.
