In waning days of Barack Obama’s time in office, a final ignominy: Will Congress override the president?

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate will vote on Wednesday on whether to override President Barack Obama’s veto of a bill allowing relatives of victims in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks to sue Saudi Arabia.

Obama on Friday vetoed the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, which would allow courts to waive claims to foreign sovereign immunity in cases involving terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, arguing it would set a dangerous precedent.

Known as JASTA, the legislation passed the Senate and House in reaction to long-running suspicions — denied by Saudi Arabia — that hijackers of the four U.S. jetliners that attacked the United States in 2001 were backed by the Saudi government.

US-Saudi Alliance: Barack Obama will veto bill that allows 9/11 victims to sue Saudi, says White House

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama will veto the bill passed by the Republican-majority House of Representatives that, if passed, would allow victims of the 9/11 attacks and their relatives to sue foreign governments suspected of backing terrorism against America, the White House has said.

The Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act was approved unanimously in the House last week, four months after Senate cleared it.

"The President does intend to veto this legislation," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said.

The legislation is strongly opposed by Saudi Arabia which is home to 15 of the 19 hijackers in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks

No curbs on Hurriyat leaders, Rajnath tells Oppn

A vexed Opposition had gone all prepared for the all-party meeting on Kashmir to corner the government on reports of curbs on Hurriyat leaders. However, when Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue saying the scope of discussion was limited because government had already planned to take such steps, home minister Rajnath Singh outrightly rejected the reports.

Home ministry sources were quoted on Tuesday as saying that government may harden its stand towards separatist leaders in Jammu and Kashmir on their foreign travel and scale down their security. While the Union home minister, a day later, denied any such move, sources in Srinagar said that only eight Hurriyat leaders live with security cover after a “threat assessment by government itself”. However, Syed Ali Geelani who is under house detention since 2010 and has been only allowed to move to New Delhi in winters, has no security at all. “J&K Police have been deployed outside his Hyderpora residence and have not allowed him to move out of his house for the last six years,” said a Geelani aide.

Zakir Naik is leaving for Africa: Why is he doing all the wrong things?

Controversial Islamic preacher, Zakir Naik, who had cancelled his return to India on Monday and said he will do a Skype press meet from Saudi Arabia, has changed the plan again.

Naik will leave for a tour of African countries in the next few weeks. This, when a host of investigative agencies in India, including the National Investigative Agency (NIA), is probing Naik's speeches based on allegations that the preacher influenced Islamic terrorists in India and abroad through his talks.

Naik had earlier planned to hold a press conference in Mumbai after returning on Monday. Naik later cancelled the meet and said he’ll address the press through Skype from Saudi Arabia. But, even the Skype meet is cancelled now and Naik has decided to leave for African countries either tonight or tomorrow, a person close to Naik told Firstpost on Monday. "Dr Naik has prescheduled engagements in a few African countries for which he is leaving tonight or tomorrow and will be busy for a few weeks," the source told Firstpost.

Naik’s decision not to return to India despite the nature of charges raised against him had instantly prompted the Indian media to say that Naik is dodging police. The preacher, who describes himself as an expert on comparative religion and Islam, is probably concerned about legal action against him the moment he lands in the airport. The preacher has actually made the plot even more complex by his reluctance to face the media and even the cancellation of his Skype meet.
