Islamabad SAARC summit to be cancelled with pullout of 4 countries

The SAARC summit of 2016 will be cancelled, a senior diplomatic source in Kathmandu has confirmed to The Hindu. The confirmation from Nepal, the current SAARC Chair, came hours after Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan followed India’s decision to stay away from the November summit to be held in Islamabad.

“There is no question of holding the summit if four countries declare their unwillingness to participate. As the current SAARC Chair, Nepal has the responsibility of seeking a solution to such pre-summit disputes but under the current circumstances nothing much can be attempted. We will do the due formalities and will declare the summit of 2016 should be cancelled due to non-participation of member-states,” said a Kathmandu-based diplomatic source.

There is evidence to link attacks in Bangladesh to IS, says Kerry

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday there was evidence to link the extremists behind a recent series of deadly attacks in Bangladesh to the Islamic State (IS) group.

Bangladesh’s government has staunchly denied that IS or any international jihadist network has gained a foothold in the country.

Instead it has blamed local extremists for a deadly siege at a cafe in Dhaka last month and a series of killings of liberal activists and people from religious minorities. But speaking after meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on a one-day visit to the capital, Dhaka, Mr. Kerry said there was “no argument” that extremists operating in Bangladesh had links to counterparts in Syria and Iraq.

Mr. Kerry, however, defended Hasina’s administration against accusations that it is in denial about the nature of the extremist threat it faces. He said the United States stood firmly behind Bangladesh in its fight against Islamist militants, and both countries have agreed to increase cooperation between their respective intelligence agencies.

Mr. Kerry was speaking just hours after Bangladesh police shot dead two suspected members of the local militant Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) group during a gun-battle with security officers.

The shootings came just two days after police killed the suspected mastermind of the cafe attack during a gun-battle outside Dhaka.

Police named the suspect as JMB leader Tamim Chowdhury, a Bangladeshi-born Canadian. — AFP

Zakir Naik is leaving for Africa: Why is he doing all the wrong things?

Controversial Islamic preacher, Zakir Naik, who had cancelled his return to India on Monday and said he will do a Skype press meet from Saudi Arabia, has changed the plan again.

Naik will leave for a tour of African countries in the next few weeks. This, when a host of investigative agencies in India, including the National Investigative Agency (NIA), is probing Naik's speeches based on allegations that the preacher influenced Islamic terrorists in India and abroad through his talks.

Naik had earlier planned to hold a press conference in Mumbai after returning on Monday. Naik later cancelled the meet and said he’ll address the press through Skype from Saudi Arabia. But, even the Skype meet is cancelled now and Naik has decided to leave for African countries either tonight or tomorrow, a person close to Naik told Firstpost on Monday. "Dr Naik has prescheduled engagements in a few African countries for which he is leaving tonight or tomorrow and will be busy for a few weeks," the source told Firstpost.

Naik’s decision not to return to India despite the nature of charges raised against him had instantly prompted the Indian media to say that Naik is dodging police. The preacher, who describes himself as an expert on comparative religion and Islam, is probably concerned about legal action against him the moment he lands in the airport. The preacher has actually made the plot even more complex by his reluctance to face the media and even the cancellation of his Skype meet.
