New York bombings suspect portrayed as jihadist who praised Laden

Federal prosecutors on Tuesday charged the Afghan-born man suspected of weekend bombings in New York and New Jersey with 10 counts including use of weapons of mass destruction, portraying him as a jihadist who begged for martyrdom and praised Osama bin Laden.

The suspect, Ahmad Khan Rahami, bought bomb components on eBay, made a video of himself testing out homemade explosives, and kept a journal expressing outrage at the US ‘slaughter’ of mujahideen in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Palestine, federal officials allege.

“Inshallah (God willing), the sounds of bombs will be heard in the streets. Gun shots to your police. Death to your oppression,” Rahami, who came to the United States at age 7, wrote in a journal he was carrying when arrested.

US investigators seek motive for New York, New Jersey attacks

Investigators were searching on Tuesday for clues to the motive behind the bombings and attempted bombings in New York and New Jersey over the weekend and to determine whether the Afghanistan-born suspect had accomplices or was radicalized overseas. Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, was arrested on Monday in Linden, New Jersey following a dramatic gun battle with police after they were summoned by a neighborhood bar owner who thought the bearded man sleeping against his closed tavern’s front door in the pouring rain resembled the bombing suspect.

Rahami and two police officers were wounded in the exchange of gunfire. Authorities did not offer any immediate information on the possible motives of Rahami, who was charged by Union County prosecutors with five counts of attempted murder in the first degree and two second-degree weapons charges.

Jung not in mood to work today: AAP hits back at L-G

AAP ministers Satyendar Jain and Kapil Mishra on Saturday went to meet Lt Governor Najeeb Jung at his office following his fax to Deputy CM Manish Sisodia to return from Finland, but the meeting did not materialise as Jung was not in his office, triggering a fresh spat between the two sides.

“It appears he is not in a mood to work today,” Mishra said taking a jibe at Jung. But the LG office retorted that it was operational on all seven days of the week and the ministers did not seek prior appointment even as it accused the AAP government of politicising the issue when the city was grappling with a health crisis.

Congress loses Arunachal two months after it got it, 43 of 44 MLAs defect

BARELY two months after the Supreme Court restored it to power, the Congress on Friday lost its government in Arunachal Pradesh when its entire Legislature Party (CLP) barring former Chief Minister Nabam Tuki joined the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) which, in turn, will become part of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
“We have all joined the PPA today (Friday) morning in the larger interest of Arunachal Pradesh. Since the PPA is already part of NEDA, we think that is the best option to work for the larger interest and overall development of the state,” Arunachal Pradesh deputy chief minister Chowna Mein told The Indian Express over the telephone from Itanagar.

A look at North Korea’s nuclear, missile developments in 2016

North Korea has conducted its fifth nuclear test on Friday, just eight months after it claimed it successfully detonated a small hydrogen bomb. Analysts say that the North’s newest test, which South Korea says produced its biggest-ever explosive yield, shows Pyongyang’s stubborn determination in face of sanctions to create smaller and lighter nuclear weapons that could be fit on future missiles capable of striking the US mainland.

Some of the notable developments in North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missile programs in 2016:

Rape fallout: West Bengal Govt puts 5,000 applications for Ola permits on hold, wants data on drivers

Adhikari said Ola operators will be required to submit data of all drivers working under them.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Adhikari said, “We have clearly given Ola cab operators a condition. They have to submit to us data of all the drivers on board with them. All the drivers must have a background clearance certificate issued by the local police station. If not, we might cancel the license of Ola in the near future.”

He further added that 5,000 proposals from Ola requesting permits were put on hold. “We will not issue any new permit to Ola until they satisfy us by fulfilling the criteria set by the transport department.”

Ola had received a temporary license to operate in Bengal around June. The state transport department issued a showcause notice to Ola post the incident.

A senior transport department official said, “The authentication of residential addresses, educational and criminal records is typically outsourced to third-party background verification companies by cab operators in India. Outside India, every taxi company requires drug screening and live-scan fingerprinting at the local police department before issuing a taxi driver permit.”

A source from a cab service provider in Kolkata said that the agencies usually take between seven and 10 days to give a report, and charge between Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 per candidate.

“It is the responsibility of the car owner as well to cross-check the background of the driver,” a police officer said. In the recent case, a minor girl was abducted, gangraped and then was murdered in an Ola cab that belonged to a different man, who in turn had hired Guddu Singh to drive it. “Getting a good driver is the biggest challenge, since most of them have migrated from smaller towns, and do not have a fixed residential address. In most cases, they do not have any proof of residence as mandated by authorities to issue a Police Clearance Certificate. It is difficult to establish all other addresses a person has resided in the country over previous years in the absence of residential proof or documentation. One has to rely on the applicant to disclose the addresses in order to check criminal records in all those police stations across the country,” said Mahendra Kumar Singh, a cab owner.

The system in which background checks have become just a formality needs to be changed, transport officials said, adding that it is important to carefully monitor, assess and report the methodology behind background checks to ensure there are no gaps.

“It looks like all these firms want someone to shift the blame in case of an unfortunate incident. I am shocked that police couldn’t stop a moving car where a girl was being raped. I was even more shocked to know that Guddu Singh, the accused, is a known criminal and yet managed to get a clearance certificate. This shows how things work here,” said Nidhi Shaw, who no longer uses app-based cab services after being harassed by a driver.

Guddu was arrested in a robbery case in 2013, and had been driving cabs for Ola since his release around two months ago.

A tea seller at Khidderpore, where Guddu had been staying, said, “He is drunk most of the time. He had a bad image in the locality since he is often found passing lewd comments on girls. He has been involved in many small crimes since he was 11. I don’t know much, but he was also in jail for some time.”

Hillary Clinton raised more than $140 million in August for her presidential bid

US  Democrat Hillary Clinton raised about $143 million in August for her presidential bid and the Democratic Party, her campaign announced on Thursday.

Of the total, about $62 million was raised for the candidate’s White House run and about $81 million was raised for the Democratic National Committee and state parties.

Clinton spend most of the month of August working the Democratic fundraising circuit and trying to amass a war chest to use against Republican Donald Trump.
×

The August hauls included a lucrative two-week swing of high-dollar events in the moneyed East Coast vacation spots of Martha’s Vineyard and the Hamptons, along with star-studded luncheons in Los Angeles and gatherings with high-tech leaders in Silicon Valley.

A three-day, $19 million fundraising trip to California included a stop at the home of former basketball star Magic Johnson, lunch at the home of musician Justin Timberlake and actress Jessica Biel and an afternoon event in Northern California with Apple’s Tim Cook. Twenty people paid at least $200,000 each to attend a nighttime event at the estate where Laurene Powell Jobs is building a dream home designed by her late husband, Steve Jobs.

Clinton has already saturated the airwaves in key states with television ads, while Trump has spent almost nothing on the general election.

Trump has struggled to raise large sums of cash. Instead, much of his campaign has been self-funded, using his personal wealth to fuel his shoestring primary campaign.

But supporters of Trump have warned that a general election requires more to be spent on expensive television ads and requires outside fundraising.

Trump has not yet released his fundraising totals for the month of August. Clinton’s campaign has already announced plans to spend $77 million in swing state advertising before the Nov. 8 election.

Her campaign said the average donation in March was $50, a signal that she is drawing from small-dollar donors and not just those who write checks worth thousands of dollars.

“Thanks to the 2.3 million people who have contributed to our campaign, we are heading into the final two months of the race with the resources we need to organize and mobilize millions of voters across the country,” campaign manager Robby Mook said in a statement.

Germany tells Turkey return of death penalty would end EU accession talks

Turkey cannot join the European Union if it reinstates the death penalty, a spokesman for the German government said on Monday, sending a clear message to President Tayyip Erdogan who has raised the possibility after a failed military coup.

The government also urged Turkey to maintain the rule of law in investigating and bringing those behind the weekend coup attempt to justice, and raised questions about Turkey's decision to round up thousands of judges.

"Germany and the member states of the EU have a clear position on that: We categorically reject the death penalty," government spokesman Steffen Seibert told a news conference. "A country that has the death penalty can't be a member of the European Union and the introduction of the death penalty in Turkey would therefore mean the end of accession negotiations."

Turkey abolished capital punishment in 2004, allowing it to open EU accession talks the following year, but the negotiations have made scant progress since then.

With pro-government protestors demanding that the coup leaders be executed, Erdogan said on Sunday that the government would discuss the measure with opposition parties.

Even before the coup attempt, many EU states were not eager to see such a large, mostly Muslim country as a member, and were concerned that Ankara's record on basic freedoms had gone into reverse in recent years.

Turkey widened the crackdown on suspected supporters of the coup on Sunday, taking the number of people rounded up in the armed forces and judiciary to 6,000.

German officials said they had seen no evidence of any conspiracy in the events beyond an effort by parts of the Turkish military to seize control of the government.

Erdogan and the Turkish government have accused the US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, a former ally of Erdogan, of orchestrating the coup.

Seibert said German and EU officials would emphasise the need to maintain the rule of law in all their conversations with Turkey. He said he expected EU foreign ministers to address their concerns about the revival of the death penalty and disproportionate punishment in a joint statement about the situation after a meeting in Brussels later on Monday.

"Everyone understands that the Turkish government and the Turkish justice system must bring those responsible for the coup to justice, but they must maintain the rule of law, and that always means maintaining proportionality ... and transparency."

German Foreign Minster Frank-Walter Steinmeier spoke to his counterpart early on Sunday, but Chancellor Angela Merkel has not spoken to Erdogan since the attempted coup, government spokesmen said. — Reuters
