NEW DELHI: Transportation app Ola has rolled out its latest update for iOS 10 users that will now allow iPhone and iPad users to ask Siri, Apple's virtual assistant, to book cabs for them.

The update, which also includes Apple Maps integration, marks Ola's growing focus on making cab booking even more accessible and convenient for iPhone and iPad users in India, Ola said in a statement.

Apple Inc.'s Jet Black iPhone Is Ridiculously Hard to Make

Anybody who has tried to buy one of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) new iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus smartphones has probably noticed that it's tough to get ahold of these phones in Apple's new Jet Black finish.

It's clear that demand for phones, particularly the larger iPhone 7 Plus, is quite robust. However, the apparently unexpected level of demand for this finish isn't the only major driver of the huge supply/demand balance that currently exists.

Per respected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, this Jet Black finish is also exceedingly difficult to manufacture right now.

The frayed scrap of paper taped to the sidewalk outside Apple's flagship store in San Francisco's Union Square had a simple message: $5 for photographs.

The sight of Apple fans clamoring to get the latest phone was replaced Friday by people looking to make a few bucks from their lead spot in the line. For the first time, being first through Apple store doors around the world is no guarantee of securing the top-of-the-line new iPhone. A combination of limited supply and Apple's push toward online pre-orders meant walk-in customers were unable to buy the larger iPhone 7 Plus version.

Apple asks Foxconn to explore making iPhones in India

NEW DELHI: Will Apple make iPhones in India? That's what Prime Minister Narendra Modi is said to have asked Tim Cook when they met earlier this year, but the Apple chief executive officer seemed to be reluctant to make a commitment.

He might be reconsidering. Apple has sounded out one of its largest contract manufacturing partners, Foxconn Technology Group, to look at the possibility of making the iPhone in India in the next two to three years, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

"There's definitely interest," said one of the two cited above. "When Tim Cook was here, the government raised the issue of making in India. It is after that that Apple started thinking of doing something in India which is long term."

Move to make devices cheaper
Local manufacturing would allow Apple to bring products to market quicker besides making them cheaper for Indian consumers and turning the country into an export hub, analysts said, while adding that this would require creating an elaborate and complex supply chain.

On his first visit to the country in May, Cook and Modi are said to have discussed manufacturing and retailing in India. Cook announced the setting up of an app development unit in Bengaluru and opened a development centre for Apple Maps in Hyderabad, with an investment of $25 million.

Apple wants to open wholly-owned stores in the country, which Cook sees as integral to winning customers by setting new service standards.

The second person aware of the details said Foxconn may take two to three years to begin making iPhones locally, the first step being assembling them in India. No timeline has been discussed, he said.

Apple, expected to launch the iPhone 7 on September 7, declined to comment, as did Foxconn. "Foxconn follows a strict company policy of not commenting on any matters related to current or potential customers, or any of their products," a Foxconn Technology Group spokesperson said in response to ET's query.

iPhone 7 Launch: Can Apple Make Listening Easy Without a Headphone Jack?

When Apple shows off its latest iPhone on Wednesday, it will answer a question it hasn't had to address in years: "What's it putting in the box?" (Besides the iPhone itself, that is.)

The iPhone has traditionally shipped with a pair of Apple's iconic earbuds, made famous in early advertising for the iPod music player. But tech analysts and industry bloggers, citing leaks from Apple's Asian suppliers, say it looks like the tech giant has decided to do away with the analog headphone jack in the next iPhone.

That means the earbuds themselves are in for a revamp, one that could hint at Apple's plans for expanded use of wireless technology.


iPhone 7: Incremental Changes
The headphone jack is drawing attention partly because there might not be many other major changes in this year's iPhone. The new models - the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, if Apple sticks to its usual convention - are expected to offer faster processors, more memory and improved cameras.

But despite a recent dip in iPhone sales , most Apple watchers expect the company to save its next big overhaul for 2017, the 10th anniversary of the first iPhone's release.

Though it might not seem dramatic, eliminating the 3.5 millimeter analog jack would be controversial. On the plus side, it could let Apple make the iPhone slightly thinner and possibly waterproof; it might also free up space for other components.

But it also means future iPhone buyers will need new headsets that use a digital connection. That could just mean changing the headset cord so that it plugs into the same port that recharges the device. Or it could herald an Apple commitment to wireless earbuds that connect to the phone via a technology such as Bluetooth. Apple already sells wireless headsets from Beats Electronics, which it acquired two years ago for $3 billion (roughly Rs. 19,915 crores).

While Apple hasn't commented, reports of the change have sparked an outcry from those who believe the old analog jacks worked perfectly well. Tech blogger Nilay Patel of The Verge blasted the move as "user-hostile and stupid."
