Cauvery fallout: Lack of cross-border transport increase worker's woes

BENGALURU | CHENNAI: Thousands of employees working in the industrial suburbs of the Electronics City and Bommanahalli and on other campuses such as Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bengaluru are struggling without interstate public transport regardless of statements of normality by government authorities.

An estimated 15,000 people working in Bengaluru's industrial suburbs live in Hosur and its suburbs because either they have home there or for reasons of living expenses. Electronics City alone employs 1.5 lakh people across segments. "The situation at the Attibele border appears as tense as it is at the India-Pakistan border," said an IT professional working in the Electronics City .

50% chance of finding missing IAF plane: Experts

Chennai: The probability of finding the missing AN-32 aircraft+ of Indian Air Force or its debris in the search area of 5,000km is 50%, according to Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (Incois ) that is providing coordinates for the search and rescue operation. Once extended the search to 9,000km, the probability goes down to 20%, an officer told TOI.

By Saturday, 13 ships, five planes including two P8i surveillance craft which can 'see' in darkness and two Dorniers were deployed for the search. On standby are a Dornier, an AN-32, two C-130 which has electro-optical and infrared sensors, and one MI-17 helicopters. Incois scientists have used Search and Rescue Aid Tool (SARAT), a numerical simulation model they have developed and have provided probable locations in the sea for search and rescue operations.

T M Balakrishnan Nair, head of Ocean Science and Information Services Group of Incois, said they have provided two triangles over which search could be done-- one about 5000sqkm and the other about 9000sqkm. The closest point of search and rescue operations from Chennai coast is 217km from the shoreline.

The 5000sqkm area, which starts 217km from Chennai coast and extends till 373km, is in the form of a triangle, with 50% probability of finding the aircraft. The rescue teams are likely to comb the area with maximum chances before they head farther.


Balakrishnan explained that they estimated clues of the aircraft could be be found within 25km from its last known position and time, as it was uncertain if the aircraft flew further or fell into the sea from that known position. Several other factors like the speed of the aircraft, flight direction, height at which it was flying were taken into consideration to decide on the search location.


All the data including the 25km estimate calculated were fed into the numerical model to calculate the probable search locations. "We calculated ocean currents and wind directions ," he said. SARAT, which is yet to be officially launched by the government, is already linked to Ocean Forecast and Information System that provides real time and forecast data on ocean currents and wind direction.
